6th/7th Grade Intra-League Game Recaps Submitted 9/11/11

Cardinals 7, Redskins 0

The 6th/7th Grade Cardinals and Redskins opened their season on the AYCA’s Colt field with the Redskins kicking off to the Cardinals. The Cardinal’s offense led by Rawley Smith at Quarterback chomped at yardage but the defensive line including Patrick Clinch, Richard Brown, Quinn Dever, Michael Makowski, and Sam Miller held strong and the Cardinals were forced to give the ball up. The Redskins head coach, Mark Engle kept the offensive line fresh by having John Knight and Scott Leven share QB and Running Back responsibilities. Running plays using Zeke Engle, and Drake Dever were strong, but the Cardinals defense of Michael Fussell, Tommy Wagner, Sam Kukler, Preston Ni, Jack Singley, Nick Cavallaro and Matthew Brown were a force that could not be overcome.

Highlights from the game included two forced turnovers by the resilient Redskins defense with Drake Dever and Richard Brown recovering the ball for the team and the Cardinals’ QB Rawley Smith completing a 20-yard pass to Jake Kidd down at the 29 yard line. Capitalizing on the excellent field position, the Cardinal offensive line of Will Vermeulen, Riley Heneghan, Cole Treadaway, Josh McDonald, and Holt Cochran and the backfield of Justin Nemetz and Luke Vermeulen blocked beautifully to allow Smith to run it in for the TD. This was followed up by a nice pitch to Jake Kidd who ran it in for the PAT, putting the Cardinals up 7 to 0. Not to be deterred, the Redskins came back completing solid passes to Hayden Austin-Knab and running the ball because of strong blocks by Garrett Grayson, David Osunkwo, Taylor Pilcher and Durham Wysocki. Ben Rosing, a Redskin who has a broken arm, did his part by carrying water and cheering his teammates. Both teams fought hard but the Cardinals ultimately were stronger and held the Redskins. The final score: Cardinals 7, Redskins 0.

Vikings 18, Lions 0

The 6th and 7th grade Intra-League Vikings and Lions opened up their season with a bang. Vikings Joe Upshaw tossed a 35 yard strike to receiver Carter Tally to start the game off. The opening drive was kept alive with the Vikings grinding out yards on the ground with their running backs Justin Reid, Adam Kyzer and Chavis Ferguson. Quarterback Ryan McCrorie was skilled and continued to challenge the strong Lions defense with a few trick plays. The initial drive was finished off by fullback Chris Zowine scoring in his first of two td’s of the game running behind the offensive line of Wilson Greene, Justyn Hector, Miles Wakeman and Jaeden Brame.

The Lions showed a lot of heart penetrating deep into Vikings territory several times in the first and second quarter with the dazzling quarterback play of Zack Cushenberry, supported by his tremendous backfield. The Vikings responded with big tackles by Matthew Swett, Jackson Grant, Ben Barton and Andrew Hill. One highlight for the Vikings defense came in the 3rd quarter with Justyn Hector putting pressure on the Lions QB which created an opportunity for Joe Upshaw to pick off a pass and take it 70 yards to cap off a great night of football.

Farley Wall, Norris Foster and Charlie Rutherford created defensive line penetration for the Dolphins clogging the middle. Late in the second half, the Dolphins offense clicked as Williams succeeded in running behind the lead blocking of Derek McDonald and the offensive line work of Sam Volan and Jake Bennett. Williams scored the Dolphins touchdown and then rushed for the conversion to give the Dolphins a one point lead with 51 seconds remaining. The Patriots behind Gee succeeded through a hurry up offense and a personal foul in driving the ball inside the Dolphins 10 with 1.2 seconds remaining where the Dolphins stopped the Patriots as time expired.

Steelers 13, Jets 0

In the opening tilt of the 3rd grade season, the Jets and Steelers took to Mustang field for a well-played first football game of the season. The Jets offense, anchored by Zakir Waggoner, Smith Cochran, Scott Dodunski, Luke Cannata, Luke Ingram, Nick Walsh, Harrison Thomas and Ethan Long took the opening drive down to the Steelers 30, hand-off plays to Long stacked up the yardage and the reverse plays involving Cochran won the 1st downs only to be stalled out by a tough Steelers defensive line led by Patrick Reaves, Dallas Welch, Jackson Grieser and Mason Pasley.

In the second half, the Steelers got the ball and were driving down the field with key runs from JR Chambers, led by blocking-back Bradley Fields. As the Steelers threatened to score, the Jets defense including Austin Turner, Jason Lynch, Bradley Byrd, Finn Allers and Scott Dodunski, rose up, stripping the ball and returning it to the Steelers 15 yard line, only to be caught from behind by a sprinting Trip Biondo. With their backs against the wall, the Steelers defense came up with their own big play when defensive end Cal Peterson knocked loose a fumble and Biondo scooped it up and scored on an 80 yard fumble return. The Steelers ran in the extra point to go up by 7.

The mighty Jets roared back with strong runs into Steelers territory and threatened to score, but the Steelers defense rose-up, with corner-backs Mac Thrasher and Oskar Schindler and defensive ends Cal Peterson and Bradley Fields and shutting down the outside running lanes.

The Steelers offense, led by center Mickey McCoy and guards John Spratling and Ethan Mearoff, took over the ball in the 4th quarter. Graham Hodges carried the ball repeatedly, as the Steelers burned up the clock. Hodges capped off the drive with a two yard plunge over the goal line. The still determined Jets defense held the line on the PAT making the final score Steelers 13, Jet, 0
